Sonia Khan was born in Madinah Al Munawarah, Saudi Arabia. She obtained her medical degree at King Saud University in 1987 with distinction and finished her internship after one year at King Khalid University Hospital. In 1988, she joined the Department of Internal Medicine at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh and she was trained in internal medicine at Hammersmith Hospital and Royal Infirmary Hospital in United Kingdom. Then, she became a member of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh in 1998 and Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London 2007. In 1992, she joined the Prince Sultan Military Medical City (formerly Riyadh Military Hospital) as a Fellow in Adult Neurology for 4 years. She was trained in 1995 to 1996 in Epileptology at RKH Epilepsy Comprehensive Program and University California of Los Angeles, USA. After her training, she was appointed as Consultant in General Neurology in 1997 and Consultant in Epileptology in 1998.

She was promoted as a Director of Clinical Neurosciences and Head of Comprehensive Epilepsy Program in 2005 up to present. In addition to this, she became the Training Program Director for the Saudi Board of Neurology. She is the incumbent President of the Saudi Epilepsy Society and the Associate Editor of the first specialized journal in the Middle East called Neurosciences Journal. Her scientific objectives are to participate in wide range improvement in the management of epilepsy in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and to participate in local and international scientific contributions to the science of epilepsy.
