Dr. Soo Young Kim completed her B.Sc in Pharmacy and M.Sc in Bioinformatics/Biochemistry at Seoul National University. She completed her Ph.D. in Neuroscience with Dr. Theresa A. Jones at the University of Texas at Austin, where she elucidated how interactions between neurons and astrocytes shape synaptic plasticity after brain damage. In her postdoctoral training with Dr. Daniela Kaufer at the University of California Berkeley, her research was focused on how changes in glia and other components in synaptic microenvironments play a role in the pathology of deficits in inhibitory neurons. With her continued research interest in progressive brain disorders, she investigated aberrant synaptic plasticity using genetic models of autism and schizophrenia while holding a position as a Research Fellow at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS). She is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacy at Yeungnam University and an adjunct research fellow at IBS.
