Stefan Kiechl completed his medical studies at the University of Innsbruck after graduating from high school, graduating in 1990 with distinction (Dr. sub auspiciis president is rei publicae). After training as a specialist in neurology and psychiatry and postgraduate training in epidemiology and biostatistics, Kiechl habilitated in 2000 at the University of Innsbruck with the topic "Natural course of carotid atherosclerosis: implications for the prevention of ischemic stroke". Since then, Kiechl has headed the stroke unit and neurovascular working group at the Medical University of Innsbruck together with Johann Willeit. The establishment of the pioneering Tyrolean stroke path and its impact on improving health care also in the journal The Lancet Neurology was emphasized was, in addition to the abundance of his scientific contributions to the development, prevention, and treatment of vascular diseases, decisive for the award of renowned awards such as the Tyrolean Science Prize, the ESO Research Excellence Award or the two-time nomination for the Wittgenstein Prize and finally also the mention at the renowned List of Highly Cited Researchers 2018. Last year, Kiechl also received the Outstanding Reviewer Award Stroke from the American Heart Association, which honors the ten best reviewers each year. His 330 publications in numerous top international journals include scientific milestones, such as work on the life-prolonging effects of spermidine-rich nutrition, those on the importance of innate immunity in arteriosclerosis (NEJM), or the publication in Nature Medicine on the key role of the protein RANKL in the development of the metabolic disease type 2 diabetes mellitus VASCage another highlight. Stefan Kiechl is currently President of the Austrian Stroke Society, a member of the Austrian Neurological Society, the European and World Stroke Society, and an editorialist of numerous renowned scientific journals such as The Lancet, JACC, or Circulation. During his university career, he supervised numerous award-winning diploma and doctoral theses and supported many successful young researchers. Stefan Kiechl is married and the father of two daughters.
