Theo Wallimann worked as a Research Group Leader and Staff Member at the Institute of Cell Biology, ETH Zurich, where he qualified as a Lecturer (with Habilitation) in 1984 and was awarded the Title of Professor in 1994. He was Head of the Institute of Cell Biology in 1995 and Deputy Head in 1996. Wallimann resigned from his position in June 2008 and is now a Prof. Emeritus.

He was born October 13th, 1946 in Alpnach, OW, Theo Wallimann studied at the Biology Department of ETH Zürich. In 1975 he completed his Ph.D. with a dissertation “Creatine Kinase Isoenzymes and Myofibrillar Structure” that was awarded the ETH price and medal. He worked from 1975-1981 as a Postdoctoral Research Associate with Prof. Andrew G. Szent-Györgyi at the Department of Biology, Brandeis University, Boston, Mass. The U.S.A., on the subject of "Myosin-linked calcium regulation of muscle contraction"​.

In 1981 he took up teaching and research as a Senior Research Assistant at the Institute of Cell Biology of the ETH Zürich to work in the area of muscle biochemistry, bioenergetics, and molecular physiology of creatine kinase (CK) and AMP-stimulated protein kinase (AMPK) for cell energetics.

T. Wallimann coached 29 ETH students towards a master of Science degree. From these, Roland Türk and Ramon Thali were awarded an ETH price and medal and Nadine Straumann received the Willy Studer Price.

T. Wallimann coached 30 graduate students towards a Ph.D. degree. From these, Dr. Thomas Schnyder, Dr. Markus Wyss, Dr. Martin Stolz, Dr. Michael Eder, Dr. Dietbert Neumann and Dr. Roland Türk were awarded the ETH price and medal and Dr. Eddy O’Gorman, Dr. Olaf Stachowiak and Dr. Thorsten Hornemann received the ETH Bonus-29 award.
