Dr. Schmalzried was an honor student and varsity letterman in Basketball. He received a degree in Human Biology, with honors and distinction, and was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Dr. Schmalzried attended UCLA Medical School on the Bicknell Scholarship. He continued at UCLA completing an Internship in Surgery, an Orthopaedic Residency, and a Research Fellowship in Joint Replacement. In 1990-91, he was the Hip and Implant Fellow at Harvard University and served as an Assistant in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Schmalzried is currently the Medical Director of the Joint Replacement Institute at St. Vincent Medical Center. Dr. Schmalzried is also on the faculty at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
Dr. Schmalzried is an internationally known leader in total hip and total knee arthroplasty having received numerous awards and honors. He is a three-time recipient of the John Charnley Award for ground-breaking research in hip arthroplasty and has more than 150 academic publications. Dr. Schmalzried has served on the Board of Directors of numerous professional organizations including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Western Orthopaedic Association, the Orthopaedic Research Society, the Hip Society, and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. In addition, Dr. Schmalzried is the Joint Arthroplasty Section Editor of Orthopedics Today, the most widely read orthopedic periodical, and serves on several other review and editorial boards.
