Thomas Ahern, MD, is fellowship trained in cardiology and electrophysiology, which is the study of the heart’s electrical system. He specializes in treating patients with abnormal heart rhythms (known as cardiac arrhythmias) as well as congestive heart failure. He is an expert on implantable cardiac devices, including pacemakers, implanted defibrillators and specialized biventricular defibrillators for patients with heart failure. Dr. Ahern is currently the primary physician in southern California to treat patients with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, a form of dysautonomia. He serves on the medical advisory board for Dysautonomia International.
A graduate of Lehigh University and Hahnemann University School of Medicine, Dr. Ahern joined the staff of Scripps Clinic in 2004. In addition to patient care, he conducts research to identify new treatments for heart rhythm disorders. He has authored numerous scientific articles and has presented original research at regional, national and international meetings. He served as an active consultant within the medical device industry, working with emerging technologies and has been awarded multiple patents. Dr. Ahern has also been honored as a “Top Doctor” by the San Diego County Medical Association and was recognized by his peers as a “Top Doctor” in San Diego Magazine. Dr. Ahern hopes to assist the Scripps Clinic staff in their continuing effort to bring the latest treatment and technological options to patients.
