Tobias Tenenbaum was born in Offenbach (Germany), on August 13, 1973. From 1993 to 2000 he studied Medicine at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, where he graduated magna cum laude for his doctoral exam. From 1996 to 1997 he studied Medicine at University of Nottingham/ United Kingdom. There he passed the Final Medical Examination of the 5th year. From September 1999 to March 2000 he stayed for an elective at the Mount Sinai Medical School, New York, USA. In 2000 he obtained his medical degree.
During his pediatric training at the Clinic for General Pediatrics, Heinrich-Heine-University, Düsseldorf, he started his research work in the field of Pediatric Infectious Diseases under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Horst Schroten whom he has worked with since. In the Infectious Diseases research group he was primarily interested in the pathogenesis of host-pathogen interaction in bacterial disease. His main focus lay on the investigation of the pathogenesis of bacterial meningitis in in vitro cell culture systems of blood-brain and the blood-CSF barrier. In 2004 he was able to perform a research project at the Theodor Kocher-Institute Bern, Switzerland to learn methods for investigating leukocyte transmigration across cell monolayers. This work was made possible through a Junior Research Support Award from the German Society of Pediatric Infectious Disease (DGPI) he received 2004. Furthermore, in 2010 he has received the ESPID Young Investigator Award.
Since the beginning of his research work he has become an active member of the German and the European Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. In 2005 he started his Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship of the German Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (DGPI) and received his diploma „Pediatric Infectious Diseases Specialist according to a European curriculum“ in 2007. Afterwards he became consultant in Pediatrics and in 2008 he received his national certificate for the general “Infectious Diseases” specialization. Following his mentor Prof. Schroten he moved 2008 to the University Hospital Mannheim, Karl-Rupprecht University of Heidelberg, where he received a Senior Physician position and is supervising the Pediatric Infectious disease ward. In 2010 he finished his habilitation. At present he participates in several clinical and experimental research projects.
