Professor Wahn began his medical career at Heidelberg University Children's Hospital and worked as a research assistant at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg. After completing pediatric training, he earned a qualification as a specialist in allergology and pediatric pneumology and habilitated at the Faculty of Medicine in Heidelberg in 1980.

As a scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation (DFG), Professor Wahn researched at the National Institutes of Health (Clinical Immunology Section) in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. As a senior physician and university teacher, he moved from 1981 to 1985 at the University Children's Hospital Bochum and followed in 1986 a call to the Chair of Pediatric Pulmonology and Immunology at the University Children's Hospital of the Free University of Berlin, he also became chief physician of the Department of Pediatric pneumology of the lung clinic Heckeshorn.

From 1998 - 2012 Professor Wahn was Director of the Clinic for Pediatric Pulmonology and Immunology at the Charite in Berlin, from 2011 - 2012 additionally Director of the Allergological and Immunological Unit at the Berlin Laboratory. Professor Wahn has been a member of the Executive Committee of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) for many years. He became its President from 2003-2005. He has chaired a number of national and international congresses as President, and from 2010 to 2017, he was appointed Chief Editor of the journal Pediatric Allergy and Immunology.
