Prof. Walter Sekundo received his doctorate in 1991 on the subject of the initial thoracic survey as a prognostic aid for assessing the course of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in AIDS patients at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. He has been working as an ophthalmologist since 1992. He completed his specialist training at the university hospitals in Glasgow and Bonn. In 1997 he was appointed senior physician at the University Eye Clinic in Marburg. From 2006 to 2008 he held the position of Deputy Clinic Director at the University Eye Clinic in Mainz. Since December 1st, 2008 he has been head of the ophthalmology department at the University Hospital Gießen and Marburg [1]and is also a university professor for ophthalmology at the Philipps University of Marburg.

As part of his work on refractive surgery, he has set up his own Smile Eyes Center at the University Eye Clinic in Marburg, which is linked to the network of eye centers and eye clinics operating in refractive surgery in the nationwide Smile Eyes Group. In 2011 he worked closely with Prof. Dr. Marcus Blum and Carl Zeiss Meditec AG to develop a minimally invasive laser eye procedure for correcting myopia, the so-called SMILE method, which is now used worldwide.
