Dr. Kain is a Chancellor’s Professor at the University of California, Irvine and Executive Director for UC Irvine’s Center on Stress and Health, where he leads a team of researchers investigating multi-disciplinary approaches to managing pain and anxiety in a wide range of medical settings and situations.
Previously, he served as the Associate Dean of Clinical Operations, Chief Medical Officer, and Chair of Anesthesiology at UC Irvine Health, and has been instrumental in implementing the Perioperative Surgical Home model. Prior to joining the University of California, Dr. Kain was Chief of Children’s Anesthesia at Yale University, where he currently teaches as an Adjunct Professor.
He is also President of the American College of Perioperative Medicine, a nonprofit organization that he created to advance the education and practice of perioperative care while breaking down silos within the healthcare industry.
Since 1997, his work on pain and digital health has been funded by the National Institutes of Health. He has also authored more than 200 peer-reviewed research publications focused on managing stress and anxiety in children undergoing surgery and invasive procedures.
Dr. Kain is a sought-after international speaker on transformational surgical care, with expertise in performance excellence in the age of change, physician engagement and buy-in, multi-disciplinary team collaboration, tactical training of physicians, Lean Six Sigma, and best practices in communication and risk mitigation. He is currently a Director on the Board of the Foundations of Anesthesia, Education, and Research (FAER) and previously served on the American Board of Anesthesiology.
